How to Choose the Right Elliptical Trainer

Working out in a gym is a good way to lose weight and get back into shape. However, many of us don’t have the time to go to a gym regularly, and all we do is end up paying exorbitant gym membership fees. It is a better idea to set up a mini gym at home. The elliptical trainer is a very good machine that provides a complete cardiovascular workout.

Before buying an elliptical trainer, you must keep some things in mind. There are many models available with the price range starting from $600 to $12,000. The cost varies according to the quality and the features available. It is not always advisable to go in for the cheaper versions, as they are not made of quality body parts. A new machine looks good, but after some regular use, the wear and tear is more visible on cheaper models. They break down easily and you have to pay a hefty price for the repairs. As such, always opt for a mid-price machine from a reputable brand.

Choose a machine with a stable base. Cheaper models are more unstable, and you can experience that when you try out the machine. Stand on the machine and try to rock it. If it rocks easily, you can determine how it will perform with regular use.

The most important thing about elliptical trainers is the stride length. If the stride length is short, you will not get a complete workout. It makes the movement restricted and hampers the smooth elliptical flow. Stride length is the distance between your front and back feet when they are extended on the trainer. The taller you are, the longer the stride length should be.

If you are going to a gym, then you don’t have much of a choice. However, if you are buying a machine for personal use, you must buy one that is compatible with your height. Ideally, the stride length should be between 16” to 21”. With a perfect stride length, you can extend your legs fully and utilize the full range of motions using your hips. However, if you and your partner are going to use it and both are of different heights, then you can go in for a trainer with adjustable stride lengths.

The price of the elliptical trainer also varies according to the features it provides. The machine can tell you the calories you have burned and the distance you have covered. It can come with an incline feature which mimics the motion of climbing uphill. This makes you exert more and thus burn more calories. There are also various resistance levels. You can choose one according to your preference. One especially useful program is interval training. It alternates between intense cardio workout and a period of cooling down. This is especially beneficial in losing weight.

Some machines also come with a heart rate control program. You can set a zone for your workout. The application then keeps a record of your heart rate and allows you to work out in the specified zone. In this way, you can set your own level of resistance and work out harder. You can control the level of resistance of your workout to a predetermined heart rate.

Lastly, always check out the warranty offered by the company. Go in for a medium range machine that offers at least 2 years service. It is a big investment after all, and you must expect full benefits.
